An Antique Ring Recreation
Bespoke
One of our favorite clients came to us with a challenge: to recreate a beautiful antique ring of her grandmother's, so all the women in her family could have their own version of the ring. Can you guess which one is which?

To keep it short

The Challenges

This antique ring was originally made through a hand carving process, and many of the details had worn down over time. This presented us with two interesting challenges. First, we needed to bring an imperfect, handmade feel to a ring designed in CAD, and we also had to imagine what some of the less legible details of the ring once could have been.

2

Perfect Imperfection Using Computer Modeling

In the CAD design stage, we made the cutouts and raised design components irregular. The intention of computer aided design (CAD) modeling software is to ensure everything is completely symmetrical and regular without much work on the designer's part. We had to override this and manually change every tiny cutout, for instance, to a slightly different size and angle.

3

Hand Finishing

Once the ring was cast, we used tiny tools to further "mess up" the symmetry and perfection of the cutouts and raised designs. We also added the beaded detail on the ring's face by hand.

The Process

We won't lie - this one took awhile! We went back and forth internally with our CAD designer for months to perfect the handmade, worn-in look of the original antique ring, and to plan out which details would be done in CAD and which needed to be hand-finished. Every time we made edits, we compared the model to the original ring to make sure we were staying on track.
