When you're picking out an engagement ring, getting the right size can be tricker than you'd think. Your ring should fit as tightly as possible without being uncomfortable or feeling stuck on your finger, but it should take some twisting and wiggling to get off. The rule of thumb is one second on, three seconds off.
But what if your ring doesn't fit the same way all the time?
That's actually really normal! We've found that many of our clients' ring size fluctuates. This can be due to a variety of factors besides gaining or losing weight. Most of them come down to water retention, or swelling, from things like changes in the weather, eating salty foods or drinking alcohol, and hormonal changes. We've found that the most common reason for changing ring size is changing seasons - a lot of our clients' rings fit tighter in the summer than the winter.
If your ring size isn't consistent, we recommend sizing your ring so it will fit when your finger is larger rather than smaller. As one example, because seasonal fluctuation is so common, if you're in between two sizes, we recommend choosing the smaller size in the summer and the larger size in the winter. That way you can be sure that you'll always be able to get the ring on, even when your fingers are larger. When your fingers are a bit smaller, you can use a temporary size adjuster to make the ring fit more tightly.
There are two types of ring size adjusters. One is a plastic coil that wraps around the back of the ring, allowing you to adjust the fit by adding more coils to the back. The other is sort of like a false bottom that snaps onto the interior of the band.
There's one more reason why your ring size might appear to be changing, and that's the width of the ring you're trying on. Rings that are wider will fit more snugly than narrower rings. If possible, it's best to determine your size using a sizing kit with a similar width to the ring you plan to wear. Hera's showrooms have both 2 mm and 5 mm ring sizers, so if you come hang out with us, we can use the correct sizer for your ring.
