We get asked about hidden halos a lot. Is it a good idea to add one to your engagement ring?
First, let’s define a hidden halo. A hidden halo is a gallery rail with pavé diamonds on it. We love gallery rails - they support and reinforce the prongs of an engagement ring.
So is it a good idea to add diamonds to the gallery rail?
We always tell our clients this: if you love the look, go for it! But if you’re on the fence, we’d recommend skipping it. Any time you add pavé to a ring, especially on the basket, you’re adding to the maintenance your engagement ring will require. The prongs that hold in these diamonds are less than a millimeter wide, and it’s normal to lose a stone or two over the lifetime of the ring. That’s especially true when the diamonds are on the basket because the basket, or head, of the ring catches and knocks against things much more often than the band does.
If you really love the way a hidden halo looks, this might be worth it to you! It’s not typically a sign of damage to lose a stone this way, and it isn’t hard to pop a new diamond in. But if you’re not sure if you love it, your engagement ring will be easier to take care of without the hidden halo.
